As the mother of two sons who served during wartime and the daughter-in-law of a World War II Veteran, Veterans Day holds a deeply personal place in my heart.
When someone you love serves, you learn that pride and worry often live side by side. You carry on with everyday life while part of your heart is wherever they are. A phone call becomes precious. A homecoming becomes a moment you never forget.
You also come to understand that service asks something of the whole family. Parents wait, spouses shoulder responsibilities and children count the days until someone they love returns. Behind those everyday moments is a steady hope that the next call will bring good news.
In our family, service connects generations. My father-in-law’s service during World War II and my sons’ wartime service remind me that behind every uniform is a person with loved ones, hopes and dreams. Their willingness to serve deserves our gratitude long after the uniform is put away.
Veterans walk among us every day. They are our neighbors, co-workers, church members and friends. Some share their experiences freely; others keep those memories close. We cannot know every Veteran’s story or fully understand what each has carried home. But we can take the time to listen without expecting them to tell us more than they wish.
Our gratitude can take many forms. It may be a ride to an appointment, help with a household task or an invitation to share a meal. Sometimes it is simply remembering to call and letting someone know they have a friend. These small acts can give lasting meaning to the words “thank you for your service.”
This Veterans Day, let’s pause amid our busy lives to honor those who served. Fly the flag, attend a ceremony or reach out to a Veteran you know. Bring your children and grandchildren into that moment, too. Help them understand that the people we honor have names, families and stories worth remembering.
As a mother, I will always hold a special gratitude for those who stood beside my sons during their service and for the families who waited for their own loved ones to come home.
To our Veterans: Your service matters. Your sacrifices matter. May you feel the appreciation of your community this Veterans Day and throughout the year. You will always have our heartfelt thanks.
