Melvia “Jean” Fersch Perkins Parks, a resident of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away August 8, 2015 at the age of 90. She was born September 25, 1924 in Milan, Mich.
Jean was the first daughter of seven children of William Alford Fersch and Thelma Ealy. Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Technical Sergeant Robert Perkins on Feb. 27, 1991, and her second husband, Earl Parks, on June 26, 2012.
She is survived by daughters Susan Perkins Knoebel, Sheryl Perkins and Sandra Perkins Raymond; son Norman Perkins; stepson Thomas Parks; stepdaughter Kathryn Parks Dolan; sisters Eleanor Huck, Janet Ankrom and Marguerite Mobley; and brother Frank Fersch. She had 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
She lived and visited places in Turkey, California, Washington, Illinois and North Dakota. She worked as a secretary at the military bases where she lived. She enjoyed camping, square dancing and was a member of the Manateean Good Sam Club. In her early years, she was involved with Girl Scouts in Illinois and was a swimming instructor in Illinois and Michigan. After settling down in Florida, Jean and Bob became snowbirds, traveling from Chippewa, Mich. to Florida. She lived in Palmetto, Ellenton and Parrish, Fla., finally moving with Earl to Aston Gardens in Sun City Center.
Jean was very active in playing different card games and Bingo with her family and friends from Aston Gardens. She loved to travel the world and enjoyed cruises. During her lifetime, she was very active in the Harvest Field Community Church and other local churches.
A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Harvest Fields Community Church, 7710 121st Ave. East, in Parrish. Following the service, the church will provide a light snack in its main hall. Jean’s final place of rest will be with her first husband at Arlington National Cemetery in June 2016.
Flowers may be delivered to the Harvest Fields Community Church in the morning to the church’s hall. Contributions or donations may be made in her name to your charity of choice.
