Betty Winn Fuller

Betty Winn Fuller of Sun City Center, Fla., died December 19, 2015. She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Samuel; and three cherished daughters, Mary Cheryl Hargrove of Boca Raton, Karen Wolfe, of Toledo, Ohio, and Deborah, of Orlando. Also surviving is granddaughter Carolyn Marie Wolfe, and sister Jean Hamilton Sandman, of Louisville, Ky. Betty was predeceased by her two beloved grandsons, John Ashby Hargrove and James Fuller Hargrove, and her youngest sister, Suzanne Hamilton Schellenberg.
Although she was born in Kentucky and spent her childhood in Cincinnati, Betty lived most of her adult life in Indianapolis.. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1948 and a Master’s from Butler University in 1977. She was an active volunteer in Indianapolis, serving as an officer on many church, school and community boards. She was Secretary in 1984 and Regent in 1976, Jonathan Jennings Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Indianapolis. She was a writer and several hundred of her poems, stories, articles, book reviews and columns have been published in magazines for children and adults, as well as in various reading textbooks.
She received the Educational Journalism Award from EdPress in 1982. She was listed in <i>Who’s Who in the Midwest.</i> She worked as Children’s Library assistant Carmel Public Library, Carmel Ind., from 1973 to 1979; she was a freelance writer in Indianapolis; Health and Education Editor for the Children’s Better Health Institute, Benjamin Franklin Library and Medical Society, Inc., 1979-1987, working on <i>Jack and Jill </i>Magazine, <i>Humpty Dumpty</i> Magazine, <i>Turtle</i> Magazine, <i>Child Life </i>Magazine, <i>Children’s Digest </i>Magazine, and <i>Children’s Playmate</i> Magazine; contributor of articles to professional journals.
Betty and her husband retired to Sun City Center in 1989, where she was one of the three founding members of the Creative Writing Club of Sun City Center. She volunteered in the Wimauma Elementary School and in the library of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, where she was a member, a Greeter and assisted the church secretary produce the early weekly church bulletins.
A Mass will be offered at Prince of Peace Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, December 28, 2015.
A Celebration of Betty Winn’s Life will be held in the Auditorium at Freedom Plaza on Monday, December 28, 2015, at 2 p.m.
