Kenneth Allen Schernekau

Kenneth Allen Schernekau Sr., of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away on January 6, 2016, after a brief illness.
He was born in Indianapolis in 1928 to Emil and Mable Walker Schernekau and graduated from Shortridge High School. He attended Butler University, where he ran track. He was married to Virginia Ecknor Schernekau until her death in 1991.
Ken Schernekau served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He exemplified the American Dream: He started as a mail boy for the Ford Motor company and eventually worked up to owning two Ford dealerships, including Hatfield Motors in Indianapolis. He was a member of Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church and a founding member and elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Marietta , Ga. He was a long-time fan of Indianapolis Racing, working for the Indy 500 as a volunteer and a member of USAC.
Ken was an avid golfer, playing most days until the month before his illness. He won several club and city championships in Marietta and later in Sun City Center. He also enjoyed boating and college football.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia and sister Kay Schernekau Daily of Everett, Wash. He is survived by three children and their spouses: Cathy and Kim Kaumeyer of Marietta; Ken and Patricia Schernekau of Stockbridge, Ga.; and Bill and Joan Schernekau of Ocala, Fla. He leaves behind eight grandchildren: Fred Kaumeyer, Ginny Barber, Jonathan Schernekau, Christopher Schernekau, Kelly Schernekau, Lauren Stewart, Blake Schernekau and Lindsay Jammoul. He also is survived by eight great-grandchildren, a niece and nephews.
Ken Schernekau’s funeral service will be held at Flanner and Buchanan, Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228 on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, 2006 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, FL 33606 and Sun City Center Hospice, 3723 Upper Creek Rd., Ruskin, FL 33573.
