Helmut Josef Haberl, age 71, of Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of Apollo Beach, passed <a href="/assets/images/uploads/wp/2016/03/flag-in-color-4.gif" rel="attachment wp-att-12945"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-12945" src="/assets/images/uploads/wp/2016/03/flag-in-color-4-150x150.gif" alt="flag-in-color" width="150" height="150" /></a>away March 11, 2016.
He is survived by his wife Wilma; son Joe; daughter Theresa; stepson Ron; and grandchildren Marie, Angela and Kristen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Steindl and Alois Wasmeir.
Helmut served in Vietnam as an aviation mechanic. After his military service, he settled in Riverview, where he served the community as a Scoutmaster and Sunday school teacher.
After moving to Sun City Center, he served the Disabled American Veterans as treasurer and driver dispatcher. He also enjoyed his friendships with the Loonies, the German-American Club, and his church.
A Memorial Service was celebrated on Wednesday, March 30, at United Methodist Church of Sun City Center. Military funeral honors followed at Sarasota National Cemetery.
In Helmut’s memory, the Haberl Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Sun City Center Disabled American Veterans Chapter 110, 1009 N. Pebble Beach Blvd., Sun City Center, FL 33573.
