Judith R. Joyner

Dr. Judith (Judy) Rebecca Joyner, 96, passed away Sept. 13, 2016. She was a native of Yonges Island, S.C., was adventurous, had a wonderful sense of humor and devoted to education and the welfare of animals.
A self-proclaimed cutup in grade school, Judy attended Berry College then earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. and a Ph.D. from University of South Carolina.
Judy spent eight years in the American National Red Cross Overseas Service in Holland and Germany, assigned to the Show Mobile Unit that entertained U.S. troops. During that time she worked in a civilian capacity for the U.S. Army. She was also an instructor at University of Heidelberg, traveled extensively, skied in the Swiss Alps and witnessed the Nuremburg Tribunals from the Visitors’ Gallery.
In 1954 Judy enlisted in the U.S. Army as First Lieutenant, assigned as personnel officer in Alabama and New York. Returning to South Carolina in 1956, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from USC, then accepted a professorship in their Graduate School of Education.
Retiring Professor Emeritus in 1983, she made Sun City Center, Fla., her home. Judy played tennis with gusto into her early 90s and drove Pooch, her spunky Dachshund, around town in her golf cart.
After 31 years in sunny Florida, she and her calico cat Pansy moved to Suwanee, Ga. to be near family. She continued to entertain us with her funny faces and witty remarks. Judith Joyner will always be our hero, and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by nephews William Joyner of Orlando, Fla. and Robert Joyner of Hollywood, Fla., niece Jean Joyner Sias and husband John Sias of Sugar Hill, Ga., great nephews Justin Sias and wife Holly Lang of New York, N.Y. and Jeremy Sias and wife Angela Sias of San Jose, Calif., great-niece Jessica Sias Wilson and husband Simon Wilson of York, England, and great-great nieces Isabelle Peach Sias, Violet-Evie Wilson and Vienna Rose Wilson.
