George A. Carlton
George Arthur Carlton (retired USN Captain), 88, Sun City Center, Fla., passed away on 12 January 2017. He was born in Queens, N.Y., on 23 September 1928.
George and his beloved wife of over 66 years, Joan Tuffley Carlton, became inaugural residents of Wedgewood I 28 years ago. Among many contributions and civic duties, George served as neighborhood association president for two years, organizer of a vigorous golf league and (with Joan) was an early proponent and participant for five years of the Sun City Center Emergency Squad.
George is survived by Joan, his sons (Steve, Doug and Paul) and their families, and seven of nine siblings.
George served 34 years in the U.S. Navy, beginning as a Flying Midshipman and retiring as a Captain in 1980. He flew over 3,000 hours in A1 Sky Raiders (primarily) from the decks of 14 different aircraft carriers. George received many commendations during his service to our country, including the Distinguished Flying Cross while an A1 squadron commander (VA-215) in Vietnam. He also served as Professor of Naval Science at the University of Colorado from 1975 to 1977.
He capitalized on education opportunities provided by the Navy beginning at Syracuse University in 1946, completing a B.S. degree at Columbia University (1957) and culminating with an M.A. degree following study at the Navy Postgraduate School, Navy War College and George Washington University (1968).
After a life grounded among a family of 12 during the Great Depression and World War II in Tully, N.Y. and fulfilled by exemplary military service, footprints on all seven continents and his beloved wife and family, Captain (USN) George Carlton has "flown west."
