Barbara Monahan, longtime local realtor and community contributor dies after a long illness.
Barbara Ann Monahan passed away Sunday, May 6, at Beaumont Southshore Hospital in Michigan after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born June 8, 1954, in Trenton, Michigan to the late Geraldine and Robert Aben. Barbara attended Carlson High School and worked and owned various businesses in the Downriver area. In 1983 Barbara began a career in real estate that spanned 35 years both in Michigan and in Apollo Beach, Florida, where she currently resided. She was a member and supporter of many local charitable organizations including Kiwanis, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, Easterseals Hillsborough County, Florida and volunteered for many charity golf events. <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
Barbara was a loving wife to her husband Ray, devoted mother to her daughters Tonya Kay Nappo and her husband Craig, Michelle Marie Baran and husband Tim and her eight grandchildren: Kent, Erin, Drew, Daniela, London, Blaine, Arianna and Paolo. <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
She is survived by her siblings, brother Robert Aben and wife Elizabeth, Claudia Lienard and husband Jason and preceded in death by her brother Terry Aben.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Barbara also has a large extended family of aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
A devoted Christian, Barbara was an active member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Apollo Beach, Florida where she served as a Stephen Minister and organized the yearly Angel Tree Ministry that provided Christmas gifts to over 900 needy families in the area. Barb enjoyed entertaining her family and friends, golfing and travel and vacation(s) with her family here in the U.S. and abroad.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
Memorial Service will be held June 1, 11 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, 5309 U.S. 41 N., Apollo Beach, FL 33572. A memorial meal will immediately follow the service.
