John Charles Skaryd
March 1, 1938 – May 12, 2018
John Skaryd passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018 at his home in Michigan. Age 80 years.
The son of the late Mamie (Kubinger) and John Skaryd, he was born March 1, 1938, in Bannister, Michigan. He married Sharon Layman on September 10, 1985. She survives him.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
John served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was employed as a commercial pilot and then in Flight Services with U.S. Government, retiring in 1988.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
John was an accomplished musician, and very involved with the Michigan hammered dulcimer community, music festivals and music clubs. For over 20 years in Michigan, John and Sharon ran a dulcimer club, Saginaw Subterranean Strings, which performed throughout the Saginaw Valley.
In Kings Point, Mr. and Mrs. Skaryd enjoyed the Country Couples dances. John was a member of the Kings Point Sportsman’s Club, the Loyal Order of the Moose, Kings Point Michigan Club, and several other organizations in Kings Point and Sun City Center.
Surviving besides his wife, Sharon, are two children: Michael Skaryd and Audra Skaryd and two step-children, Tammy Kaake and Kelly Jo Schmidt.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>John’s siblings include three brothers and two sisters and their spouses: Jerry and Marie Skaryd, David and Yung Cha Skaryd, Barbara Galehouse and Norm Martin, Robert and Linda Skaryd, Mary Sue (Suzie) Skaryd and C.T.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>John had many nieces and nephews. He especially valued his many Kings Point friends.
In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Bannister, Michigan, and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date in Kings Point.
