Deacon Angelo John Pignataro, 92, of Apollo Beach, formerly of New York, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at Saint Joseph Hospital South in Riverview.
Deacon Angelo, son of Frank and Nancy (Caligiuri), was born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a cook during World War II. His military service was followed by a long career in the insurance industry with Metropolitan Life, Wausau Insurance, and the Jim Walter Corporation. He and his family moved to Apollo Beach in 1974.
At the encouragement of his pastor and friend, Fr. Christopher Fitzgerald, I.C., Deacon Angelo entered formation and was ordained to the Order of the Permanent Diaconate on May 2, 1987. He was appointed to serve at St. Anne Catholic Church in Ruskin and Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center. During his ministry and service of 32 years, he deeply touched the lives of many. He witnessed the sacrament of marriage for dozens of parishioners, several of whom he assisted in receiving annulments. Deacon Angelo baptized hundreds into the faith and conducted many funerals. Deacon Angelo cherished his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be greatly missed by those who were touched by his profound spirituality and his commitment to the Lord and his family.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline (Percontra), his children: Janet (Jerry), Angelo (Jeanette), Deacon Thomas (Lucy), John (Michelle), Paul (Cheri) and Nancy; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nancy; and four siblings: Carmine, Joseph, Gloria, and Mary.
