John Marshall Gaines Sr.

John Marshall Gaines Sr., 89, of Sun City Center, FL, formerly of Milan, MI, died on November 28, 2019, at his daughter’s residence in Rochester, IL.
John was born November 22, 1930, in Detroit, MI, the son of Dr. Claude & Signe Schwartz Gaines.
He married Barbara Peschel in Patterson, NY, on September 6, 1958.
John graduated in 1947 from Milan High School in Michigan and then served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He then attended the University of Michigan for his Bachelor’s degree. He went on to receive his Master’s degree from Columbia University. He worked for the CIA, as well as the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress. In his free time John enjoyed politics, golf and reading.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Claude Gaines; and sisters, Alice Jean Gabert and Lois Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gaines; son, John (Bobbi Priest) Gaines Jr. of Milan, MI; daughters, Kirsten (John) Transue of Rochester; and Laura (Carolyn Roman) Gaines, of Columbus OH; grandchildren Michael, Stephanie, Marshall, Samuel, William, James, Adam, Alexandra and Soren; many great-grandchildren; sisters Audrey Staulter of Milan, MI, and Signe Ruth Sponsler of Hemet, CA; and many loving family members.
Cremation will be provided by Lincoln Land Cremation Society.
