Barbara Schuerch Smith

</span><br />Barbara Schuerch Smith, 83, of Hanover, N.H. and Sun City Center, FL died on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011. She was married to Dr. Robert C. Smith for 53 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was deeply loved by many.</p>
<p>She received her B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy from Milwaukee Downer College and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Women’s Medical Specialist Corps of the U.S. Army. Her assignments were at Walter Reed and Fitzsimmons Army Hospitals. Later she worked for Dr. Howard Rusk in New York City at the Rehabilitation Center. He was instrumental in forming the American Korean Foundation. Barbara was chosen to be a member of the rehabilitation team to work with the Korean people in 1953. Upon her return she worked in neuropsychiatry for several years. As director of the O.T. Department at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, she met with chaplains to set up services for the patients. That is when she met her husband Dr. Robert C. Smith. Later she received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Trenton State College. She worked in the Neshaminy School District in Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>While raising a family, they lived in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. They lived for twenty six years in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Barbara served for more than 25 years as a devoted Girl Scout leader including a service unit director. She was awarded the Girl Scout “Thanks” award, an honor that recognizes truly outstanding volunteer efforts.</p>
<p>She is survived by her husband Dr. Robert C. Smith, four grown children and six grandchildren. They are Randolph Arthur of Falls Church, VA; Eva Wendell Behrens and her husband Andrew of South Strafford, VT; Carl William Smith and wife Laura of Riverdale, NY; Barbara Ann Masteller and husband Erin of South Strafford, VT. Her grandchildren are Emma and Rebecca Behrens, Emily and Eliza Masteller, and Benjamin and Hannah Smith.</p>
