</span><br />Edith Mikula, 90, of Sun City Center, died Oct. 20, 2012. She led a life of courage and resilience. Born in Slovakia, she had a wonderful life, marrying Joseph in 1942. World War II and the Communist takeover of her country brought great challenges. Imprisoned by the Communists because of her husband’s anti-Communist underground movement, she endured mental torture and threats. Released briefly, to implicate others, the underground helped her escape with, at her insistence, her two daughters ages 5 and 6. Enduring a 40-hour journey of walking, crawling and swimming, they made it to the American zone of Austria on Nov. 1, 1949. Reunited with her husband, they came to America in 1950. Working hard, they built a life for themselves and their daughters in Detroit, Michigan.</p>
<p>Edith was loving, strong, charming, caring, vital and active until a few months ago. Preceded in death by her daughter Katherine (1988) and husband (1998), she will be deeply missed by her daughter Susan, granddaughters Clare and Laura, great-grandchildren Joey and Gemma, and her loving and wonderful caregiver Rachel Rose. A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 26 at Prince of Peace Church in Sun City Center.</p>
