Loren W. Smith

March 13, 1937 – October 18, 2012

</span><br />Loren W. Smith, 75, of Ruskin, FL, passed away at home Oct. 18, 2012. He was born March 13, 1937 in Jefferson County, Iowa, the son of Oren W. and Ethel E. (Willis) Smith.</p>
<p>Loren contracted polio at age 16, affecting his legs. Even so, he played golf for many years.</p>
<p>The Late Effects of Polio (PPS) caught up with him in 1997, so he had to quit work and ride an Amigo scooter to get around. He defeated many opponents playing shuffleboard seated on his scooter.</p>
<p>He worked as a design mechanical engineer at Clark Equipment Co. and Kellogg Co. in Battle Creek, MI, and Brown &amp; Williamson in Macon, GA.</p>
<p>Loren enjoyed travel, photography and computers. He published newsletters, first for the Middle Georgia Camera Club, where he won many ribbons in photography competitions.&nbsp; He was also editor and publisher of the Southern Hillsborough County Post Polio Syndrome Support Group, and the preparer and publisher of the RiverBreeze telephone book.</p>
<p>Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Dawn (Fisher-Taylor); his twin sister Bonnie (Norm) Dixon; brother Laird (Janet) Smith; children Loren Wayne 2nd, Jeff, Sheryl (Frank) Tobar; stepchildren Cande D. (John) Wendel, Rick and Bob Taylor; and many grand- and great-grandchildren.</p>
<p>The memorial Service was Oct. 20 at RiverBreeze MHP, where he is remembered as a past president of the Board of Directors.</p>
