Alexander Miller Smith

– October 20, 2014

Alexander Miller Smith, 91, of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014, at LifePath Hospice, with his wife Beverly at his side.

Formerly of Beach Haven, N.J., he and his wife retired to Sun City Center in 1990. He played golf and lived “the good life,” enjoying every minute in the Sunshine State.

Born in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 4, 1923, he retired as Sales Manager from Prudential Insurance Co. after 27 years of employment. Miller served in the United States Naval Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1946. He loved his NY Yankees, golf, swimming and hosting parties with his wife. Miller’s parents emigrated from Scotland and settled in Caldwell, N.J. After his military service, he joined his father in the family business, Smith Boring and Parts, in Montclair, N.J.

Miller is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 65 years, Beverly Smith, daughter Beverly Alexis Swenson and son-in-law Rick Swenson, all of Sun City Center: nephews Louis Chamberlain of Margate, Fla., and Stewart Chamberlain of Pine Island, Fla. Miller was preceded in death by son Douglas Scott Smith, who died in 1986, and his parents, one brother and one sister.

Miller suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He passed peacefully in his sleep.

Miller’s body was donated by his family for organ transplantation and to scientific research in hopes that the contribution will help to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. His remains will then be cremated and at a later time buried at sea.

At Miller’s request, there will not be a memorial service.
