Joanna R. Smiley, 89, of Sun City Center passed away peacefully surrounded by a few members of her loving family on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Aston Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Sun City Center.
She was primarily a homemaker but also helped her husband with clerical work for his insurance company.
Born in Martinsville, Ind., on March 10,1926, she was raised and educated in Michigan, where she met Warren Smiley on a blind date. They married on May 22,1942. They had six children, and were married for 57 years.
Her greatest source of pride was her family. She was fun-loving, spirited, kind-hearted and loved all animals. She enjoyed dancing, all types of music, playing the organ and any activity that involved her family. She was a fabulous cook and enjoyed preparing homecooked meals for family get-togethers.
A faithful member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, she was baptized in November 1962. In 1955, they moved from Michigan to Fort Lauderdale, and then moved to and lived in Winter Haven from 1968 to 1974. She lived in the Apollo Beach / Sun City Center area from 1974 to the present.
She was preceded in death by daughter Sharon Lee Goff in 1985; grandson Richard M. Smiley in 1999; son Randolph Lewis Smiley in 1999; and husband Warren G. Smiley Sr. in 2000. She is survived by sons Warren G. Smiley Jr. of Fort Lauderdale; Gary L. Smiley of Valrico; James D. Smiley of Lakeland; and daughter Carol Pompilio of Rainbow Springs. She had 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at 4:30 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 11725 Symmes Road, Riverview, Fla. Inurnment will be a private family service at Lauderdale Memorial Park at a future time.
