Ruth Eaton Shambaugh

Ruth Eaton Shambaugh died Friday, July 10, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital – South, after a long illness.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George; children Amy Markovitz of Tigard, Ore., Timothy Shambaugh of Boring, Ore., and Laura Pickard of Carmel, Ind.; grandchildren Cara Robinson of Boring, Brian Picard of Honolulu, and Matthew Picard of Carmel; great-grandson Keegan Robinson of Boring; and sister Doris Salyers of London, Ohio.
Ruth was born in Orlando, the first of four girls. She finished elementary schools in New York and Ohio, and graduated from Enon (Ohio) High School. She earned her BS in Education from Wilmington College. During college, she worked nights as a nurse’s aide. She taught third grade in Ohio and Massachusetts for several years. She worked on her master’s degree at Akron University and Walsh College and became recertified to teach mentally challenged students in Ohio until her retirement.
Ruth was active and held offices in professional educational societies: Early Childhood & School Age Students, Professional Association for the Retarded, Council for Exceptional Children, Ohio State Teachers Association, and Ohio Educational Association.
Some of her volunteer work includes church pianist, children’s choir director, hand-bell choir member, member of choirs and choruses, treasurer of Sunday school, held offices in youth church groups, served on numerous committees, and was a church deacon in the Presbyterian Church. In college, she was on the Gospel Team, president of the Dormitory Council, served on the YMCA/YWCA board, and was vice president of Vespers.
She sang in numerous choirs and choruses, and played violin in orchestras. As a member of the American Association of University Women, she was a member of the science and the arts interest groups. She continued volunteering with mentally challenged students after retirement at the Wooster (Ohio) Community Hospital, the Startzman Free Clinic and Ruskin’s Camp Bayou. She was a leader of a Girl Scouts of America troop, counselor at their summer camps, and a representative at the regional and state levels. She was a docent at the Wayne Center for the Arts. She has volunteered at Even Start, a program to help underprivileged mothers, and at Beth-El Mission.
Hobby interests were choral music, opera, ballroom dance, cued round dance, clog dance, folk dance, watercolor and oil painting, crafts, gardening and creating topiary. She was a life member of the Ohio Genealogical Society, actively researching her family. Ruth and George were named Citizens of the Year in Wooster by the <i>Wooster Daily Record.</i>
